Coronado has a long history of beach polo, dating to the early 1900s when the Spreckels Cup was first played in 1909 (Polo Challenge). It consisted of local and international teams, usually comprising navy officers. This remarkable event has been organized with the sole purpose of reviving this old forgotten tradition and to entertain guests, celebrities and polo players from all around the globe.

Over this Labor Day weekend, the Coronado Patch reported about some of the events at Beach Polo at the del Coronado, explaining that “attendees will be treated to two polo games each day, plus activities such as a meet-and-greet wine reception with players, a gourmet lunch provided by Hotel del Coronado, a fashion show by Grayse, a hat contest, a tapas dinner and tango dancing with the polo players.” It’s sure to be great as it’s put together by Polo America.

In the Coronado Eagle & Journal, Randy Russell of Polo America explained that the last event today would include tango with the players. “We hired instructors to teach the Tango and attendees can dance with the players. The weekend will have a little bit of everything. It’s the other events around the polo matches that will make the weekend fun.” So cool!

President Benjamin Harrison arrived by train in San Diego early on the morning of April 23, 1891 as part of a cross-country campaign effort. Reportedly, he greeted San Diego well-wishers in his dressing robe and slippers from the back of his railcar before heading over to The Del for breakfast. He was greeted by a delegation of dignitaries, including Governor Henry H. Markham and Baja California Governor Luis E. Torres. The first in-office president to visit the city, Harrison returned to San Diego by boat across the bay after being serenaded by the Coronado Band. Despite the effort, Grover Cleveland defeated him in 1892.
