Palm Springs Phenomenal Film Fest – 25 Years Later

Palm Springs Phenomenal Film Fest – 25 Years Later

25 years after Sonny Bono’s vision became a reality, celebrities, film aficionados, and flamboyant rock stars were on the V.I.P. list to attend something every movie fan dreams of going to: the the Palm Springs International Film Fest Awards Gala.

What started out as Sonny Bono’s personal project (a quarter century ago) has developed into one of the biggest and most respected motion picture events in North America. Made possible by generous sponsors Cartier jewelers and Mercedes Benz, this star-studded event served as a sort of a prelude to the Golden Globe Awards and Academy Awards.

Although this prestigious event was not televised, this allowed for a more relaxing atmosphere; resulting in jokes and compliments among stars such as Julia Roberts and Matthew McConaughey.

Over 2,000 guests attended this monumental 25th year gala, and numerous standing ovations occurred when it became apparent to the Tinseltown crowd that a lot of genuine gratitude was flowing between the award presenters and the honorees, instead of the usual Hollywood dialogue.

Among the winners were Sandra Bullock, given the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Tom Hanks, who received the Chairman’s Award, and Julia Roberts, recipient of the Spotlight Award. The highlight of this pinnacle extravaganza was realized when Film Fest Chairman Harold Matzner proudly presented the Icon Award to (three time Oscar winner) Meryl Streep, who was considered for a Golden Globe award for her stellar performance in August: Osage County.

Congratulations to Chairman Harold Matzner, Honorary Chair Mary Bono, Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet, and over 800 volunteers for coordinating such a spectacular celebration.

Indeed, the legacy of brilliant musician Sonny Bono will continue to shine brightly as this significant Palm Springs International Film Fest now enters its next quarter century of challenges, accomplishments, and inspiration.

Bravo!

J.P.W.
