The 85th Annual Academy Awards
The 85th annual Academy Awards entertained, sang, and laughed in extravagant Hollywood tradition during an unforgettable evening that featured a little bit of everything, from Barbra Streisand delivering her angelic “The Way We Were” in honor of composer Marvin Hamlisch, to William Shatner (as Captain Kirk) joking with host Seth McFarlane via a remote feed. This dazzling awards production seemed to have something for everyone to enjoy – even youngsters were acknowledged as the Pixar 3-D adventure “Brave” won for Best Animated Feature. Highlights of this exhilarating Oscar’s presentation included Shirley Bassey belting out her trademark “Goldfinger” song (in honor of James Bond movies 50th anniversary) and Catherine Zeta-Jones singing “All That Jazz” from “Chicago” as part of this year’s Oscar’s theme “Music in Film”.
Best known as the creative genius behind the Fox animated series “Family Guy,” host Seth McFarlane convincingly guided this 85th awards show from the very beginning, making Tommy Lee Jones laugh. He impressed the crowd and T.V. viewers around the world with a winning combination of charm and personality, yet at the same time talented and relaxed, without being overconfident.
Triumphant this historic evening was Ang Lee, competing directly against industry leader Steven Spielberg (for the 2nd time) with his celluloid achievement “Life of Pi” which chronicles the story of a boy, a tiger, and a lifeboat. This fascinating mega-hit took home four Oscars and has grossed a remarkable $600 million worldwide.
Stealing the spotlight Sunday night as movie fans, critics, and directors sat on the edge of their seats was Argo, capturing the prestigious Picture of the Year Award. The Best Actress category was somewhat unique this year; with nominees ranging from Emmanuelle Riva (86 years old, from Paris) to Quvenzhane Wallis, just 9 years old. But it was excitable Jennifer Lawrence who stumbled her way (literally) into history when she accepted the award for portraying a young widow in “Silver Linings Playbook.”
Surprising almost everyone early on during this stellar awards show was Christoph Waltz, grabbing the Best Supporting Actor statue away from legendary Robert De Niro and top contender Tommy Lee Jones. Anne Hathaway walked away with her first Oscar and captivated everyone with her exceptional performance of “I Dream a Dream” as character Fantine (in Les Miserables,) practically canonizing her as a saint in Hollywood history.
Without a doubt, glamorous Tinsel Town once again outdid itself- rewarding those actors or actresses with exceptional God-given talent, and we (the viewing public) are privileged to experience these accomplishments on the big screen.
