At-Home Facial Steps
You can get all that glow and pampering from an at-home facial performed with your own tender hands. While staying at home and maintaining social distancing drags on, no rule says you have to neglect the care and love your skin desperately needs.
At this point, almost everyone misses their beauty professionals and a well-deserved day at the spa. You might wonder how long you would have to stay without these sessions to keep you glowing from week to week. The good news is, you don’t have to wait long at all.
The trick is to have fun with it and savor every moment. Here are the steps for a spa-worthy facial treatment at home.
- Cleanse
Cleansing is like the hallmark of all things facial and skincare. You must ensure your skin is washed clean to rid it of oil residue, dirt, makeup, and other impurities. To cleanse, you can wipe off any makeup you have on with cleansing wipes. Then use an oil-based cleanser such as coconut oil or olive oil to wipe off most dirt. Finish with a mild foam cleanser and wash with lukewarm water. Some of our favorite products for this step include Chanel Sublimage L’Huile-en-Gel de Demaquillage and Dove Beauty Moisture Conditioning Facial Cleanser. Â
- Exfoliate
Exfoliation is where the magic starts to remove dead skin cells and brighten your skin. When doing facials at home, you can choose between natural ingredients in your kitchen or formula scrubs. Homemade scrubs can be sugar, salt, or oatmeal scrubs. Our picks for popular and gentle exfoliating formula scrubs are Odacite Bioactive Rose Gommage, St. Ives Gentle Smoothing oatmeal scrub & mask or its counterpart for dry skin, St. Ives Energizing Coconut & Coffee scrub, and Clinique’s bestselling Exfoliating Scrub. Rub the scrub into your face in a circular motion and rinse off after with lukewarm water.
- Massage
Now it’s time to improve muscle tones and increase blood circulation for firmer and brighter skin. Taking a small amount of face massage cream or your favorite oil in your fingers massage the face from the middle of your forehead towards your temples. Work in a gentle upward direction for the entire face. Do this for 10 minutes and rinse with water.
- Steam
Open up your pores and prepare your skin to absorb beauty products with the steaming step. For this facial treatment at home steaming is as simple as boiling clean water in a pot and leaning over it when the stove is off. Let the steam caress your face for 5-10 minutes.
- Mask
The mask you choose for your at-home facial depends on what your skin needs. You can use a hydrating cream mask, depuffing sheet masks for the eyes, or even an oil-absorbing clay mask. Again you can look to your kitchen for a natural mask such as oatmeal and avocado blend or products like Twilight Face Mask and Mamonde Flower Lab Essence Sheet Mask. Leave the mask on for up to 15 minutes before washing off.
The last step is to moisturize and massage. Get your favorite serum and moisturizer and layer them both on in gentle upward motions.
