Every year, the Golden Globes begin the gleaming award season, bringing the first appreciation of the best movies and television of the year. In 2015, we saw a lot of great talent and superb movies, including The Martian, Joy, Carol, to name just a few. The movies in the major spotlight were The Revenant, Spotlight, Carol, and Room; and among the television series were Mr. Robot, Empire, Games of Thrones, and Outlander.
I’m so proud of all the outstanding work my fellow DePaul alumnus, Dean Culbert, and his staff have been creating at the Theatre School at DePaul University, especially since the opening of their new artistic space on Racine Avenue. As a continuation of Chicago Playworks for Families and Young Audiences, the new season will feature the world premiere of Prospero’s Storm, a play based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
This week marks the departure of yet another contender for the Republican presidential nomination. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina struggled from the very beginning to gain any traction, rarely polling better than one-percent and being perpetually relegated to the undercard debates.
The Art Institute of Chicago is today considered one of the finest museums in the world. I visit often, and when I wander through the halls I always encounter the many artistic and aesthetic styles that have evolved over hundreds of years. I can bear witness to all the new visions, changes in beliefs, inventions, and experimentation in the arts as an unbroken process in the Art Institute’s galleries.
Defying all expectations (including my own), Donald Trump remains the Republican frontrunner as we enter the final stretch to the early primary polls. The smart money still bets he’ll lose in the end, as the weaker candidates are winnowed away and voters in the “undecided” column make their decisions. It is expected that these erstwhile supporters of fallen candidates and so-far undecided voters will break disproportionately against Trump and toward a safer and more conventional candidate.
The fabulous Drake Hotel was the center of attention for the 14th annual PAWS Chicago Fur Ball as nearly 700 dog enthusiasts and their trusty companions showed up in support of a very noble cause.
If you’re ready for some relaxation, while indulging in arts and culture, Santa Fe is the perfect getaway destination. Located in the Sangre de Cristo foothills, New Mexico’s capital city ranks as the country’s third largest art market, with more than 200 galleries to explore. It also boasts one of the largest state museum systems featuring the rich culture, history and traditions of the region. We recommend a stay at the iconic La Fonda on the Plaza, because of its central location, its newly renovated Southwest-style rooms and their pampering wellness services.
While the Democrats have been running a fairly ordered campaign season (thanks in no small measure an unstoppable frontrunner scaring most challengers off), the Republican race has gone off the rails. It is clear that the Republican National Committee and party grandees no longer have control of their party or their nominating process.
