Phenomenal Footwork: Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s Jubalee Gala

Phenomenal Footwork: Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s Jubalee Gala

The Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park was the perfect location where an enthusiastic audience of over 250 tap dancing fans recently gathered for the Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s Jubalee Gala.

In the spotlight this year was Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who was given the title of Jubalee Honorary Chair. Hosted by accomplished news journalist Bill Kurtis, highlights of this celebration included a short speech by the Mayor and several outstanding performances by the Better Boys Foundation, the Mexican Dance Ensemble, and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra Principal Players (among others.)

This extraordinary tap dancing exhibit is not the only event Chicago Human Rhythm Project (C.H.R.P.) offers the tap dancing community. Four times a year C.H.R.P. presents programs around the city at such places as the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Harris Theater, and the Cindy Pritzker Theater.

From its humble beginnings in 1990 (when it was co-founded by Lane Alexander and Kelly Michaels), C.H.R.P. started a summer festival in Evanston with just one performance at Northwestern University. Since then it has successfully developed into the most in depth and thorough annual tap dance fest in the world. In the process of that success, C.H.R.P. has achieved notable recognition as the first year round presenter of both percussive and concert tap dancing across the globe. This premier event managed to collect over $130,000 in proceeds, making it C.H.R.P.’s largest fundraiser.

Deserving a special thanks for this wonderful dance presentation is sponsor BMO Harris Bank, C.H.R.P. co-founder Lane Alexander, emcee Bill Kurtis, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel. No one walked away disappointed from this amazing tap dancing showcase, as the Chicago Human Rhythm Project continues to grow, expand, and ultimately elevate their level of talent year after year…

We all look forward to next year’s monumental 25th Anniversary milestone celebration!
