What To Expect From Art Basel Miami Beach 2018
Art Basel Miami Beach 2018 is coming! For five days in early December, this extraordinary cultural event grips the city in its thrall, spilling over into all walks of city life. It’s the ultimate contemporary art show, a near-week long cultural event and happening party for modern art aesthetes!
This year’s 17th edition of the Art Basel Miami Beach event, which runs between the 5th and 9th December 2018, will be no different. This Miami art extravaganza completes a glorious trinity preceded by similar events in Hong Kong and Basel, Switzerland.
Few would argue that the best is left to last. The Art Basel Miami Beach is North America’s premier art fair. It’s not only the fabulous weather, food and people which make this extraordinary event such an unmissable stopover on the world art circuit. It’s the way the city embraces the Art Basel as a cultural event for everyone who lives or visits there. There are dozens of satellite art fairs, parties and other events offering breathtaking alternatives to the main show. For a few days, everyone in Miami lives and breathes modern and contemporary art. Celebrity spotters might even bump into Beyonce or Brad Pitt!
Art Basel Miami 2018 promises to eclipse even its predecessors. This year there will be a staggering 268 top art galleries and museums exhibiting at the Miami Beach Conference Center. These will feature the works of 4,000 artists from 35 countries across the globe. This year’s focus is on artists from Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. The full breadth of art media is on show, including paintings, sculptures, photos, videos, and installations. It’s the perfect route for international artists wishing to enter the U.S. art market.Â
The Sfeir-Semler Gallery will be exhibiting many works from Arab artists, including Etel Adnan, Yto Barrada and Wael Shawky. And the Goodman Gallery will be showcasing works from African artists that share a colonial theme.
In place of last year’s outdoor sculptures is a live performance by conceptual artist Abraham Cruzvillegas. Check out two video works by Nigerian artist Zina Saro-Wiwa and Iraqi artist, Hiwa K. Don’t miss Malawian artist Billie Zangewa’s Vision of Love series of hand-stitched collages either.
At the Art Miami on Biscayne Bay, a special exhibition curated by actress Brooke Shields will feature works from the New York Academy of Art. Close by, British artist, Lucy Sparrow, will be presenting her Triple Art Bypass installation. And at the UNTITLED Miami Beach fair, you can admire Felice Grodin’s virtual and augmented reality project, Mezzbug.
Â
There’s even a Survey section in the conference center, which will feature works created before 2000. Here you can enjoy the early glass sculptures of Iranian artist Monir Farmanfarmaian, among many others.
Whether you’re an artist, an art collector or an art aesthete, Art Basel Miami Beach 2018 promises to offer the very best in modern and contemporary art. If you visit only one global art event each year make sure it’s this one.
