The True Stars of the Cannes Film Festival – Queens Over 50

Spread the love

You can be 50 and successful. You can be 86 and thriving. You can also sashay across the red carpet at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival while proving to everyone that beauty and success only get better with age.

The 77th annual Cannes Film Festival took place in the south of France from May 14 to 25. As expected, there was no shortage of glamor as heels clicked to center stage, each outfit as enviable as the next.

But it was much more than a style that held the spotlight of this event. If you had to put a tagline to it, the recurring theme was – fabulous women over 50.

From Cher to Jane Fonda and Michelle Yeoh, the older women at the 2024 Cannes Festival were too stunning to ignore.

Years ago, these women would have thought their careers were over at a certain age. They are determined to continue sharing their brilliance with the world that changed everything.

Some looks we couldn’t get enough of include;

Irene and Cher

Cher

Cher graced the red carpet in a black fluid dress thoroughly complimented by a matching fur bolero. The 78-year-old singer and actress not only took our breaths away with her outfits (which later included other incredible looks) but also performed at the amfAR Gala Cannes.

Michele Yeoh

Michele Yeoh came party-ready in a distinct two-part dress. Maroon looked too good on the 61-year-old multi-award-winning actress.

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda, who is just four years away from 90, turned heads with a sparkly black jumpsuit designed by Elie Saab with the right amount of drama as an extra flowing fabric at the back.

As a L’OrĂ©al Paris brand ambassador, the Oscar-winning actress is considered “a role model for generations.”

Juliette Binoche and Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep was the epitome of class in her white gown. The 74-year-old actress was awarded the first of three Honorary Palme d’Or during the festival’s opening ceremony. Streep took the opportunity to talk about aging and success in the industry.

“Thirty-five years ago, when I was here for the first time, I was already a mother of three. I was about to turn 40, and I thought that my career was over,” she said

“And that was not an unrealistic expectation for actresses at that time.”

Others who were stunning with age and poise included Julianne Moore, Naomi Campbell, Isabelle Huppert, Demi Moore, Cate Blanchett, Juliette Binoche, and Andie MacDowell.

Beyond the dresses, you could also see how vibrant their skin looked. It was refreshing to see some of the natural fine lines that come with age being so widely embraced among the older ladies.

If beauty improves with age, it must be because of the experience that breeds confidence.

Fonda explains it best when she touched on the topic on Lemonada’s Wiser Than Me podcast: “I have made peace with my body. It has gotten me a long way. It stood up for me. So, I appreciate my body. I don’t criticize it and hate on it anymore.”
