For Richard Rose, the path to telling captivating mystery stories started in his early childhood.
“I suppose my passion for writing found its origin in my passion for reading. As a kid, I devoured adventure books by the masters such as Treasure Island and The Sea Hawk. But my favorite genre was mystery and detective fiction. In grade school, the Hardy Boys were my idols. I couldn’t wait to rush down to the bookstore in Kokomo, Indiana, my hometown, to buy the latest Hardy Boys mystery. In high school, Sherlock Holmes became (and still is) my favorite sleuth. However, I am not ignoring authors of the hard-boiled detective fiction such as Dashiell Hammitt and Raymond Chandler, who had an impact on my writing. “
This passion had a source and, according to Rose, “Aside from reading, it came from radio and the movies. On the radio, I rarely missed listening to programs like Sam Spade, Suspense, The Inner Sanctum, and I Love a Mystery. For the ones that came on late, when I was supposed to be asleep, I was forced to put the radio under my bed cover and with the volume down, press my ear against the speaker. When I wasn’t home with the radio, I would be at one of the seven theatres in Kokomo, taking in the latest adventure, war, comedy, horror, and, of course, mystery flicks. Sometimes I had to suffer through some turgid melodrama or love story of a double feature before I could watch my movie of choice.”
After earning a BA in English from Wabash College, Rose went on a tour of duty on the East/West German border as a German linguist. When he returned, Rose began a long career as a First Vice President of a major Chicago investment firm.
But that didn’t stand in the way of Richard’s passion for writing. He wrote and announced for the first television coverage of the stock market on WFLD-TV, wrote short stories that were published by Mike Shane’s Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, screenplays, and his novels – The Lazarus Conspiracies, The Gumshoe, and The Retribution.
The Retribution is Richard’s third novel and sequel to the award-winning novel The Lazarus Conspiracies. All three novels feature the beautiful Irene Michaels as the cover model.
When asked how he gets the time to write, Rose shared, “By keeping a yellow pad and pen in my briefcase. For me, writing on the yellow pad comes first. It allows my creative juices to free-flow in longhand until I can get them into my computer and onto the printed page for refinement and polishing. This process allows me to write anytime and anyplace. It could be in my Ford Edge parked at a scenic spot overlooking Waube Lake near my Indiana lake retreat, listening to classical music on the radio and sipping a latte. It could be while eating breakfast or lunch in a restaurant, or listening to jazz at a nightclub such as The Green Mill in Chicago. This requires the use of a flashlight pen, which also resides in my briefcase.”
And as for what motivated Rose’s writing, the author says,”it was my learning experience at Wabash College, a small liberal arts college in Crawfordsville, Indiana, which has been around since 1831 – and is still all-male – where I graduated as an English major. There were only 500 students when I was there, so we all got a lot of individual help by the faculty. It was my English Professor and mentor, Dr. Fertig, who encouraged me to continue to write. While there, I contributed cartoons and satirical articles for the humor magazine and short stories for the literary publication.”
