Celebrating Women In Labor and Business
In the early 1980s, Congress officially requested the President-designate the month of March as a national celebration of women’s history. Although it would take several years of resolutions to make it an official proclamation, celebrations began the week of March 7, 1982, now known as ‘Women’s History Week’.
On this first day of March, and with this year’s theme in mind – “Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business” – we begin our own celebrations by sharing an array of some of the empowering events happening in Chicago throughout the month.

SimplyBe Bright Personal Branding Workshop

Jessica Zweig and Lisa Guillot are hosting their second signature personal branding workshop for women. Las Cafeteras with Beats y Bateria and DJ Angelfuk

This Los Angeles band of Chicanos performs music which fuses traditional son jarocho and Afro-Mexican music with zapateado dancing, hip hop, spoken word, and pop elements. They sing about topics of immigration and social justice. They will be joined by Chicago’s own Beats y Bateria and Angelfuk of the duo, The Ponderers. Tickets here.

Women of the Now Presents: The Rise of the Femme Pyre

World Chicago Presents Chicago Celebrates International Women’s Day

For the 16th year, WorldChicago is celebrating International Women’s Day with an annual Fair and Luncheon. This year, the keynote speaker will be Iram Shah, Senior Vice President of Customer Transformation at Schneider Electric. Ms. Shah runs The Sonia Shah Organization, a foundation started by her daughter that aims to educate girls and provide their lunches, uniforms, basic medical care, and clean drinking water in Kangra, Pakistan. Immediately prior to the luncheon, there is an International Women’s Day Fair at the same location that showcases local organizations that support women in their work. Register for your spot here.

Educating and Empowering Girls Around the World

Join the USNC-UN Women Chicago Chapter on Thursday, March 9th at Hilton Asmus Contemporary Gallery for a panel discussion on the topic of girls’ education and empowerment around the world. Focus areas will include the status of girls’ education and empowerment in the developing world, the status of refugee girls in Chicago, and how people can help support girls’ education and empowerment both locally and globally.

Celebrating Chicago Women: Pioneers in their Field

In honor of Women’s History Month, stop by Chicago Public Library’s Special Collections to view one-of-a-kind artifacts that document the history of Chicago’s female leaders. Guests will view archival artifacts and manuscripts from a variety of collections and hear the inspirational history behind the materials. Archivists Sarah and Beth co-host an open house in Harold Washington Library’s Special Collections to highlight the story of local pioneers in the Chicago Theater Collection and Vivian G.
